That little cricket is cute! She looks like she could be the Restless bush cricket(Hapithus agitator). Maybe? We have a similar species, Musical bush cricketHapithus melodius that is only found in Florida.

That's a really neat little cricket, Precarious! I've never seen anything like that. How small is it compared to a standard house cricket?
I thought so too. Never saw one like it. It's small. Maybe as long as dime is wide. I think likebugs is right in her identification.

You are on the job! I had no idea on species.

I would have had no idea, but it just happened to be similar to a cricket I looked up to identify not too long ago.

I like to research and attempt to identify almost everything I find, or see in other's photos, especially native species.

Just a bit of fun for me. :)

Well you certainly know what you're doing. I wouldn't even know where to begin.

I did find this good page once you gave me the name:

Looks like I just make it into the map of its domain:

Check out the male's unique courtship song:

http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/walker/buzz/671sls.wav

"In peninsular Florida and eastern Texas, males of the restless bush cricket produce a loud distinctive song. Elsewhere they are not known to call."

I would remember that if I ever heard it! Like an oscillator going from low frequency up into audible range.

I love listening to the insects when I can. I sometimes get all annoyed when I am listening and someone comes peeling out down my street.

I couldn't say if I have heard that particular call or not, I don't have the best long term memory. I definitely haven't heard it lately where I live. There are still plenty of calls going on around here, but I suspect it is mostly katydids and some other types of crickets.

Btw, I just try to be aware of all of the life around me. It is probably some type of compulsion(it seems to annoy the husband sometimes), cause there are many productive things I could be doing, like this monster pile of laundry.

Pretty simple really...

A grasshopper is a dude all hopped up on grass:

Cricket is British baseball:

A true katydid is honest:

And false katydids are usually pretty obvious... unless you're drunk:
