I don't think I've ever done this before. I missed a hatch. I didn't realize they'd be so small, much smaller compared to the ootheca than the various boxers. They hatched in the last week or so after being laid last September.

I didn't even know that you were still keeping mantids, Orin.

Did any survive?
Why would I ever stop? The strange thing is I have been looking through the side of that container almost every day since September but they were so tiny I could not see them over the fold between the wall and bottom of the container and they can't climb.

Orin, the same exact thing happened to me when I was keeping ground mantids. Except by dumb luck, I decided to look in one day for some reason and there they were. They are unbelievably small and the fact that they don't climb makes it easy to miss a hatch.

Awww, that's so sad. :( I'm sorry Orin.

I didn't know that there were mantids that couldn't climb. Again, learning something new in here like almost every day. :smarty:

It took me way longer to figure out what you meant by the title than it should have. I couldn't figure out how mantises could miss their own hatching.

I'm sorry for your loss if by your post I am assuming they passed before you found them.

I failed with a group of litaneutria, they refused the mel as hatchlings.. couldn't get springtails in time.

Didn't even cannibalize to survive.

Another ootheca is hatching so hopefully a good number hatch and they don't die. To be honest the springtails look a bit big for them.

Awn. Sorry to hear that. :( Do you have another ootheca that you're expecting a hatch from soon? Something to look forward to?

It would seem the new hatches are from the same ootheca (the second one hasn't started hatching yet). The first hatches were just a few in number but I thought the rest had died. Interestingly they all come out one tip of the ootheca like Brunneria.

Good luck with the rest. Not sure if spider mites are any smaller then spring tales, but i have used them before for small species with decent results.
