o.k. for a week now i have been all over the state trying to find some mantids with no luck do you think its to early? i have been to the karner blue park, the state meadows, and a few bogs and swamps with nothing more than a few grasshoppers and crickets. anyone that hunts mantids in NH please help a fellow out.

Weedy areas. Find a place that is chock full of waist or chest high weeds. These places are often along roads, overgrown lots, etc. If you walk into the area and see grasshoppers everywhere you can bet there are mantids. It also helps to have a good eye to locate em. That takes practice.

Spotting them is the hard part for me. Go the kinds of places Rick recommends and look at every little detail. Look for small coloration variations, and I mean small!

Get u a big net at the nearest dollar store to take with you and sweep the grass, also put big sign on your back so the other men in white with bigger nets do not try to catch you :tt2: sign should say " looking for mantis" ! ahaha I kill me! :)

Also while u r out there looking for mantis, when u get home, take all your clothes off and look for ticks :tt2:

well i just got back home after pulling off the highway on 93 north near exit 18 there was a nice place with tall grass and shrubs, i took my butterfly net and caught a few interesting things, lots of locus, grasshoppers, spiders, toads, and i even caught a little brown bat lol. but still no mantids, even caught the eye of a state trooper lol.

Keep at it, after you find a few your eyes will start to pick them out easier. I know what you mean about bringing attention to yourself, I've seen a few people looking at me like I was a nutter while waist deep in grass looking for mantids  . Doesn't anybody play outside anymore? lol

I think the net is not the best way. I don't know. I don't find it hard at all to see them. Of course I have been finding them like that since I was a little kid.

I agree with you rick! I only go mantis hunting with my back pack. it contains 32oz deli cups to put the mantids in. I find my mantids by sight, and are caught by hand. One time i took a net to my local park. The parks department gave me a huge problem because everything in the park is protected. Being i had the net, they thought i was up to no good. Well witch of course i was actually. :p I was looking for lizards to catch. I also had to school them in the local wild life. They did not have a clue?
