My name is Anna and I very new to the hobby. One of my friends has just given me a mantis and I am excited and nervous. It's a young mantis, maybe L3 but I am not entirely sure. I am also pretty sure it's a female. So far I count 5 segments on its abdomen but we'll see as she (?) gets larger. It's a good one to start with but I wish I knew what species it is. So now I have to get some deli cups to give it a better home. My friend also gave me some small crickets to feed her with so that should hold me over. Expect a lot of questions from me.

Hi Anna, welcome to the forum!  If you post some pictures of your new mantis, members here might be able to help you identify the species.  And it sounds like you already know how to determine the gender.

There's plenty of very helpful posts in this forum, including many stickied topics, but if you can't find what you're looking for, feel free to ask!

To be honest, I was really surprised when the opportunity came up. The guy is my husband's coworker and he said that a ooth had hatched. We live by the beach so I was really surprised that we had mantids this close to the beach. As for a name, that hasn'e even occurred to me yet. I want to get a feel for her personality.
