Hi, Mantidforum!

I'm very new to the hobby, but a long time enthusiast. I've finally reached an age with a job stable enough that I can actually begin keeping mantids, rather than just admire them from afar. And, I mean, when I say new, I mean REALLY new. The only experience I have with actually KEEPING a bug is about 4 days. I had been browsing the forum and looking up reputable breeders for a while when I found a little Carolina female outside of work. I was running late already, so I was running towards the door with my arms full of books, and stopped in my tracks when I saw her. I was kinda frazzled and spent some time trying to pick her up but also hold all those books, and, surprisingly, all that did was piss her off. So, I crossed my fingers and ran inside to fetch a cup, ran back, and she was still there. (Yay!)

Soooo, yeah. Now I have a bug. And she's my favorite bug. I mean, for now. I'm currently at work, but just down the street at the post office, there's an orchid nymph in a box with my name on it, and it's kinda killing me to wait. I need my child. I NEED it.

Anyway, I am a new hire at a library, and we do a bunch of displays for... things. Anything, really. So, what I wanna do is set up a display with different kinds of exotic mantids that I've raised, and share them with our patrons. Hopefully THAT one guy doesn't come in drunk and ruin everything. Maybe I'll put up a fence or something.

Don't hate on me too much for the mason jar. She only lived in there for a day or two, and I ALSO know the critter keeper isn't an ideal solution either. I'm hoping to get a tank or something that I can put some dividers in so I can display a few different species.

The Little Carolina (Album)!

(She is a naughty bug and looks up **** while at work. She apparently has a thing for Asians. Silly girl.)

Wish me luck with the new baby!

Edit: Got the Orchid! It looks healthy, though a bit timid. I would be timid, too, if I was shipped overnight in a cup.

Shhh, don't look at me! I'm a flower!

Welcome

May be some legal concerns with your idea of displaying exotics.

Oooh, dang. Didn't think of that. Some quick googling of state laws leads me to believe that the only exotics that the state of Arkansas is concerned about are "large carnivores", which are defined as:

(1) "Large carnivore" means any live individual of those species of animals that are inherently dangerous to humans, including:

( A ) Tigers;

( B ) Lions; and

( G ) [sic] All bears
Oh, my!

I believe that as long as I'm not releasing them, (which I would never do,) everything should be okay. I might get in touch with Arkansas Game and Fish just to provide some clarity. Thank you for bringing this up, it didn't even cross my mind!

If you do get in touch with them don't mention that you already own an exotic mantid. They're legality is a bit of a gray area.

Hello and welcome to the forum

The main downfall of the critter keepers is the slotted ventilation - as it will allow GB/BB flies (Green Bottle and Blue Bottle flies) to escape, doesn't provide good gripping areas for your mantid, and mantids tarsus/apical claw/feet/or entire legs can go through and become trapped and broken off.

The easy solution is to cover the entire lid area with standard poly/fiberglass window screen mesh (just cut out around the top hinged access lid) and hot glue it into place. Your mantid will thank you for it. ;)

You can read more about setting up a substrate by searching the forum or reading the topic here.
