Hello Mantid Forum,

I've been creeping here for a few weeks, and I have yet to get my first mantis, but it'll happen pretty soon. I live way up north on the shores of Lake Superior. I've lived here a very long time and have never seen any mantids living wild, but I'm not surprised with the harsh winters here.

So far my invertebrates collection consists of 4 tarantula spiderlings: B.vagans, B.albopilosum, A.avicularia, & L.parahybana (my hearty eating B.vagans is so far my favorite). Our house also keeps a menagerie of other animals both inside and out: 3 backyard chickens, guinea pigs, hamster, dog, and several freshwater aquariums. What else am I interested in?

  • I'd like to start an insect collection of the pinned/dried variety, and think that once summer is here in full swing, some night collecting of moths could be really interesting.
  • Our family is also taking a little road trip as far south as Indiana in a few weeks. I believe a species or two of mantids live there (can anyone confirm that?), it'd be really fun to try to find and catch a few in the wild as well.
  • I have a tiny youtube channel with some footage of some of my random animal collections: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgDguJMoJmp_HeXO298ICvw
Cheers, - Heidi
