Hi! I dunno what was so appealing about my title that got it a click, but I thank you for opening it up anyways!
My name is Fraidy, I'm going to college in a Hospital Unit Clerk program, I'm Canadian, and I certainly cant hamper my curiosity, so here I am! I got my interest in mantids by visiting the victoria bug zoo and holding one of their chinese mantids. After the initial shock of f#$% thats a big bug! i found that theyre very charming and intruiging creatures, and very suitable for my lifestyle. I cant wait to read whats on this forum! Later on, after a couple days browsing YouTube, I decided that if my grades were good enough I'd spoil myself with an ootheca from the zoo . So if you see me slacking off here, yell at me to go study!!!
I know that some people ask me why i actively decide to be called 'FraidyCat', and its because its who i unabashedly am! I am very, very easily startled by things entering and leaving my vision, sounds, or just by realizing something that i didnt realize before - needless to say, I havent found a decent ringtone in years. I really do want to face my fears in the natural world, since its where a lot of my fears stem from (though note, none of these fears are phobias! while irrational, they are not nearly to that degree of intensity) and it'd be great to be able to hold and manipulate crickets without cringing ^^; I can hold a snake twice my height with nothing but cooed pet talk, reptiles that could potentially harm me if drastically pushed, ive handled tarantulas and scorpions and all walks of life, but a cricket? the end times are here. Spiders? boy, i wig, but i can still pony up the courage to scoop that sucker outdoors.
I live in a house with two reptile keepers who are both kind-of passively interested in owning a mantis as well, so im a bit of a guiney pig, so im not completely alone when it comes to owning exotic pets (certainly no stranger to tank setups!). Friends in high places! As well, im a volunteer with a local exotic pet show, so the more knowledge i can soak up the better, i might bring any mantids i own to educate wee little canadian children on Mantids since they're such a rare sight up here.
My interests include Cats, Writing, Art, Video-Making, and Videogames! A lot of these things likes to coincide, I'm working on a book about cats, and i like making videos with videogames!
And, if it isnt entirely apparent yet, I ramble a lot ^^;
