Hello, my name is Vitor, im from the Netherlands and im new to the praying mantis community :)

I bought my first mantis (Hierodula sp.) a few days ago, and im thinking of getting 3 Phyllocrania paradoxas

i would like to keep 2 or 3 maybe more together.

Welcome to the forum! Hopefully you can do better than me with the paradoxas... I had a lot of aggression between them

Thanks thanks  :D

Realy, but i thought paradoxas did good with more together.

Do you know why you had so much aggression?

Greetings.

Hello Vitor and welcome to the forum

While Ghosts (Phyllocrania paradoxa) are often labelled as communal species, all mantids are carnivores so there can be (and usually are) a few incidents of cannibalism even in the best setup. It simply means the Ghost unlike most other mantid species, will not cannibalize each other as fast or readily.

To keep the risk down the Ghost mantids need to be nearly the same size (instar), given plenty of space, and plenty of feeders. If having a mantid die from cannibalism is a concern the only guaranteed way to prevent it is to keep them housed separate though.

See below for an example, and there are many other posts are on the forum too...

@Vitor sorry for not getting back to you... I didn’t see your response. Not sure why I had aggression to be honest. It was a while back so I don’t remember much. I was probably just more paranoid then anything. Just be sure to feed often!

Thanks for the answers everyone.

Im thinking of getting another Hierodula sp. and maybe next year or later this year i will keep some ghosts in my aquarium, when i made it empty.

its a 1.20meter aquarium so i think thats enough space, and i will feed them often

what do you guys think, will that be a good idea?
