After caring for 3 wild caught Chinese mantises, I found another, different looking mantis on Saturday, just sitting by my garage door.

I'll post a picture when I can, but can you help me identify it?

It looks pretty much like the other Chinese that I previously raised, but is slightly smaller with a shorter wider abdomen.

It is a light tan color, without the green streaks on the wings that the others had. Her antenna are also a lot shorter than my previous mantises.

It is getting pretty cold here in Ohio, so I assume she is fully grown and maybe getting old.

There was a little white residue on her tail, making me think that she had already laid an Ooth, but I'm not sure about that.

After keeping her for a couple days, I've fattened her up a lot on various bugs that she's eaten. Curios to see what she does next.

Mantis religiosa?

EDIT: Here's an image with a color of the color you mentioned.

That top picture you posted (sitting on the car) looks a lot like this one. Are these Mantis religiosa common in Ohio?

The whitish eyes also seem to match up to my girl.

The main difference is mine seems to have a shorter, fatter Abdomen than the one in your picture.

It's also got a black circle marking on one of its "arms" but I don't know if that means anything or is just a battle wound or something.

If it has a bullseye like mark in between its arms, then it is definitely religiosa.

The one in the first picture is a male, so females would be much fatter. The second pic is a female.

Thanks Mime and Andrew. You guys are good at this!

Is there anything special to know about taking care of this species?

Given the season, she's probably pretty old so won't last long. For the remainder of her life, the species is pretty hardy, so much mist occasionally in a well vented area and enjoy her!

Just for future reference, avoid trying to ID a mantis based off of color alone. Color varies among species and even individuals.
