Welcome! Mantises are not a form of pest control despite what may be advertised! They are simply predators. They eat beneficial and non-beneficial insects. They make cute additions gardens either way.

I recommend maybe trying to catch one outside and keep them for a pet. Maybe see how it goes! Do you live in a southern part of Canada?

The study which claimed mantids didn't eat crickets in field plots (the number of crickets increased) was refuted in a follow-up study by its own author a few years later but the myth that mantids are not beneficial lives on.

Welcome!

Just because an insect is beneficial does not necessarily make it a viable means of pest control. I’m happy if you’re able to prove me wrong on this notion for mantises though. It’s just they’re still generalists and will eat anything they can get their little claws on. Including beneficial pollinators.

Ah gotchaaa prob will just have to get lady bugs instead! We live in southern Saskatchewan but haven’t ever seen a mantis out in the wild before!
