Hello Everyone,

I have some Acromantis formosana ooths. I know they were fertile, because I witnessed the mating processes. I used a glue gun to glue the ooths to the top of their containers. At the time I didn't know the difference between low-heat and high-heat guns. I just bought the cheapest gun at the crafts store.

It's been a couple months now and none of my ooths have hatched. So, did I cook the little guys? What do you think?

Who can say, Carol, though I'd be surprised if the heat killed all the eggs in every ooth. I would suggest, though, that you throw that glue gun far, far away and go and buy a low temperature one or try aquarium silicone sealant, or super glue, or denture fixative, or thread, or, or........anything but high heat glue!

I dought you could have cooked them with the glue gun, but then again anything is possible. Take one of the ooths and slice a thin layer at the end to expose some of the eggs. If there hard and black they probally dried out. If there yellow and gooey there probally not fertile. If you find wriggling nymphs than your good to go.

Hello All,

First off, thanks for all the replies :) I tried slicing into them, and out of 6 ooths, I got half black and shriveled and half green and gooey. No squiggling. It seems I didn't keep them humid enough.

Here is a green gooey:

Well, this will teach me to keep them nice and humid.

I think either they were not fertile (can happen, even if the mantids connect... and connect many times!), or they dried out. I disagree with Phil...

don't throw your hot glue gun away! I use a high heat one and I like it 10 times better than the low heat one. When gluing ooths, I just apply a dab/blob/line (whatever the particular shape and size of the ooth calls for) on the surface to which I'm affixing the ooth... not on the actual ooth itself. Then I wait about 5-10 seconds for the glue to cool just a bit, press the ooth on, and it's good to go! ;)

Well, Katt, we all know that you are the Master (Mistress?) of the Glue Gun, so I'll defer to you, but I still think that if you don't know the difference between one tip and the other, you might want to try something else! :D

They just don't appear to be fertile as katnapper stated. After 2 months of incubation this species should have hatched out by now.

Hi Carol, u need a low heat glue gun, I am sure they probably cooked. Even when waiting for the glue to cool a little it is still very hot, and I always just use a tiny drop of glue, which is plenty, and with the tiwan ooth, they have two little points on one end of the ooth, stick just those 2 points into the glue and it will hold them.

Low heat, high heat it doesn't really matter. I have both. The real question is how much glue did you use? All you need is a TINY drop. It doesn't take much to hold an ooth in place. Just put a tiny drop and put a little bit of the end of the ooth on the glue.

I have to beg to differ on this as I am guilty of "accidentally" cooking a few of my babies in an ooth after buying a cheap gun but making the mistake of using too large a bubble to mount my ooth. So, now I use the tiniest drop and no more problems. Also, intense light sources with really high heat close enough to the ooths will also cook them so be careful!

Yep, this is my method with the glue gun. A tiny dab, wait, and then just as it's in the of getting hard, I attach the ooth. If you can touch your finger to the glue and it's "very warm" you are golden. Sometimes I wait too long and the glue gets hard but as you do it enough, you learn timing better... the ooth sticks wonderfully.

Just as a testament to Katnapper's method, I have not had a single ooth from kat that didn't hatch. I admit, I've only gotten 3.. (just got a 4th the other day) but they were all pre-glued by her and they all hatched. Also, she is known as the glue-gun expert at her home ;) A regular Josey Wales with that glue-gun! lol
