Howdy!

I'm a student at Texas A&M, studying Entomology. I've had a few mantis as pets and raised some from ooth to adult. They are my favorite insect and I am very interested in getting another for a pet.

I want to do a little more research to find my favorite species and build the perfect habitat for them, so I figured this forum was the best place to be.

Greetings Aggie! :) What species are you thinking of getting?
Really interested in the Idolos.

Have been researching them quite a bit, and want to make sure I have all the necessary equipment for a perfect habitat to raise it in. From what I've seen it seems like the Idolos are a little more challenging to raise than other species.

A challenge I am definitely up for. I really enjoyed raising my Mantis, and am looking forward to getting another one(or several more)!

and..Thanks Yall! :cowboy:

good luck on the idolos. i have been doing this for close to 8 years and still haven't attempted them. any ways this is not meant to be discouraging just a word of caution :p

Definitely not discouraging, I appreciate any advice anyone may have. Although the Idolos is definitely one of my favorites, I was thinking about trying something a little bit easier to start out with. I've hatched some native Mantis from an ooth, and raised a couple to adult, then released all but one.

I'll do some searching on the forums to find some nice starter species.

Idolos are definitely do-able but they are a challenge - there are a number of people here that have had success with raising them and know all the pitfalls, so there's a lot to read up.

As for beginner species: what are you interested in? Large or small, colorful or cryptic, mantis-looking or ######-is-that-looking...

You could also become a Forum Supporter and get free Popa spurca nymphs. :)

Definitely Large, Colorful (Cool Cryptic), and as you put it "######-is-that-looking" hahah (Or mantis looking)

Would like a large, but doesn't have to be the biggest species out there. Would rather something unique, but still of decent size.

Any suggestions?

You will most likely be buying smaller sizes anyway, which is more fun as you can watch them grow up and change.

Large: Hierodula membranacea, possibly Violins (Gongylus gongylodes), I'm sure others will suggest some options.

I'm having fun with the 3 species I'm raising but none of them get over 3" or so.

my favorite mantis i have right now is a texas unicorn highly recommended and a good stepping stone to idolos.
