I know them as "whipspider" (with or without space) since ever. "Tailless whipscorpion" is rather new to me. However, that's why vernicular names are to be avoided whenever possible.

By the way, PhilinY, I cannot believe pest control people would be out killing vinegaroons. Such harmless bugs, beneficial if one wants to take the anthropocentric view. I don't like the term pest at all. There's only one pest species on this planet as far as I'm concerned.

I suppose if everybody kept mantises, the world would view many "pests" as feeders and that would be some kind of progress.

That's what I'm saying all the time...

Do you know this joke?

Two planets meet each other. One says "Oh boy, you look horrible, what's wrong? Are you sick?" "I got **** sapiens..." "Oh, I know this, that's really bad! But don't panic, it will go away..."

I like the joke and I'm glad you feel the same.

I think we're just children in consciousness and we'll be around for a long time. Maybe not without destroying most everything around us first! Just like parenting, we mostly learn as we go.

I've forgotten what the thread was originally about, but that's one of the nice things about this forum!

Ah Peter, you incurably nice guy! "Just like parenting, we mostly learn as we go." Yes, but we don't learn fast enough!

We damage our children as we learn, and we seldom go back to heal the damage caused by our ignorance., and the wounds fester.

And yes, "we'll be around for a long time," and we certainly won't destroy the earth. The earth was fine before we came and will be fine long after we whimper off into extiction (just a little dirtier and more radioactive).

In another thread, I quoted Bunyan's famously nerve tingling line about Valiant-for-truth's entry into heaven (lousy theology, by the way) and wondered whether it was not bathotic to apply it to two mantises. But then I thought of how Superfreak had loved and cared for her mantis and how mine had kept me good and amiable company for over six months, and I thought of how difficult it would be for me to spend even an hour in the same room with that cold paragon of virtue, so I decided that if I had only one Voluntary to give, it would go to the mantids.

"Et lux perpetua luceat eis." (Thought I'd offend the Catholics as well as the Protestants)!

Um, thanks Phil. I'll grab my dictionary, my most handy thesaurus (a dinosaur among modern references) a set of encyclopedias, a latin translation dictionary, a book of famous quotes and get back to you on all this...might take 8 years and a PhD, so please don't wait up for me!

And thanks again!

Yep, that about wraps the thread up for me too ;)

Happy 500 posts, by the way!
