LOL! Holy cow... I read the 10 year old thread. I've done a couple of experiments on mantids, but none that required removing body parts.

I've always suspected that some mantids seem to recognize their caretakers, particularly on feeding day. I've had a few that almost seemed to be "intelligent" and "friendly", but I believe it's just my own anthropomorphic projection.

However, I do find myself chatting with them occasionally to entertain myself. Nothing complicated obviously, but I've had less engaging conversations with many humans.

If anyone successfully transplants a mantis head... I'll make the first bid!

That's probably part of the appeal of mantises. The fact that they seem kind of human. It's weird how the moth brain is able to get "rewired" to the body, once it's been moved to the abdomen. They must have fairly primitive physiology compared to mammals, for instance.
