I was just thinking, if all goes well and the human race continues to exist millions of years into the future, how would our mantids in captivity evolve?

Would they lose everything that makes them an interesting species?

Seeing as camoflouge isnt needed anymore in captivity would they all revert to the bog standard mantis body?

As true as it might not be needed, it does not have to be changed either. there is no threat to the mantis which would make it change its overall appearance.

In addition, you could always get the mantids with more vivid and exotic colors, and breed them.

we could have prize mantids, like prize horses :D

If we exist millions of years from now it won't be on this planet.

Maybe not on this planet alone, but we sure might live on this planet. Even if the sun were to implode millions of years from now, who is to say we wouldn't have some way of making artificial sunlight, in 2000 years we have gone from riding horses to flying jets. Imagine millions of years from now.

with a population genetic background, this concept that "they all revert to the bog standard mantis body" is ridiculous. Even though there is no constant pressure from predators to select the ones which are not as well camoflauged, there is also no selection pressure to select against those which are well camoflauged. Evolution does not work like that, with no selection pressures, the other mechanism which drives evolution is genetic drift with change in a population's gene frequency by random. Even this wouldnt cause any "revert to the bog standard mantis body", as any genotypic and phenotypic changes would be small (and random).

as long as mantids are not selective bred (by providing very strong selection pressures), mantids in captivity will remain as they are. Any changes would be solely on a genetic level and at most, on a behavioural level; definitely not on such an extreme morphological level as you have suggested.

When the sun dies the earth will not longer exist because the sun will expand and engulf the earth before it burns out. That won't be for billions of years though. I doubt we will be here 1000 years from now because we will have done destroyed the earth and stripped it of everything. Not to mention overpopulation.

Actually, it is not sure as to whether or not the Earth will be "consumed" by the sun when it finally deteriorates.

If it does not, the only sunlight we will get will be from the white dwarf star (what used to be the sun), which will not be enough to sustain life as we know it.

And anyways, nobody has the slightest idea whats going to happen millions of years from now. Time alone will tell.

And we will all be long gone.

The question would be viable if we evolved, but alas we didn't! see below....

Genesis 1

1. In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

2. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

3. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

4. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

5. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

6. And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.

7. And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

8. And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

9. And God said, Let the waters under the Heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

10. And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.

11. And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

12. And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

13. And the evening and the morning were the third day.

14. And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

15. And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.

16. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

17. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,

18. And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

19. And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

20. And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.

21. And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

22. And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.

23. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

24. And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.

25. And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

26. And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

28. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

29. And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

30. And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.

31. And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

And here is why there will be no sun, we won't need it! And there will be a new heaven and a new earth because where there was sin, will not be fittin for God to dwell in!

Revelation 21

1. And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

2. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

3. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.

4. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

5. And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.

6. And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

Huh, what the heck has this got to do with that...

Mantis' will rule the earth, biting off and eating the heads of every human being, and all long before the sun explodes/implodes and cooks the mantis' to a smelly charcoaled mass of, ugh .

Sure, some dumb human will make a film about other humans coming out of some hole in the earth and starting over, and looking for the medium rare section of the flame broiled mantis', but it'll all be BS.

Humans will at that point be petrified mantis dung :) the fact that humans are already full of it merely reinforces my theory/hypothesis :)

Maybe Rick knows what he is talking about when it comes to us being gone, or more like our progeny and theirs ... and maybe that's why the mystery of prehistoric man hasn't been cracked.

It's a gov't plot to keep us as slaves to the gov't and not to realize we need to flee this planet before the sun makes poo poo all over us, and maybe he's really not in the SE USA. Maybe he's on Saturn, or Jupiter, and eating soylent green, laughing and giving us all the finger back here on earth, and that's why he's so adamant about people on here using the search function, cause there will be no more intelligent humans here to ask questions of. My oh my.

The earth will lose it's magnetism when the sun dies, and will just wobble out of control and smash through the window of some other space and time continuum, and Gods mom will yell at him, "i told you not to play with that thing in the house" while all of this universe is sucked through the black hole that God's yo yo, earth, made in the space and time fabric.

God's mom will then take the earth away from God and put it up in the cupboard so he can't play with it for a while, and all will be black on earth, and when she takes it out of the cupboard the new earth, the one that Rebecca's post refers to, will start over, with some cupboard dust and a bunch of roach and cricket ###### from the cupboard on it... God's mom shoulda bought some bug paper for her shelves from rebecca before putting the earth up on the shelf, tsk tsk.

And I'm not even going into what's gonna happen to God's little butt when his dad gets home from work, oh man, hide the belt... :)

Sorry man, I just got carried away. Too much time living alone I guess .

Those dog gone evolving mantis' <_< They started all the bad stuff on this yo yo, errr, earth

;)

This is Gods punishment to all us humans, to worry about dad coming home from work, and when the sun will explode ... yeah, who cares, I'll be in the big freezer in the sky, hurtling toward that big hole in the universe that the earth created when it flew off it's axis... WOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Now what was your concept on mantis'....

OMG this post is the funniest one I've ever read before!!! :D

I was drinking a soda when I read this and almost had DrPepper go up my nose!!! - I'm with sk8erkho, share what you got!

Seriously, dude, get out of the house... take a stroll in a park... get a girl, even for just an hour!!! LOL

I'm gonna start taping plaid, rainbow and polka dot printed paper to the sides of my mantis containers! I'm gonna get a heads up on this!

Woo whoo!!!

Maybe... or maybe we will become like that race of "people" that travel from planet to planet, like in the movie "Independence Day" and we will take all our little mantids with us, and we will be the cool people of the bunch. And everyone will want to enter our domiciles just to see our cute little creatures!

Then one day we will piss them off when one of us accidentally opens a fruit fly container near an air circulation vent and they hunt us all down and release us into outer space in pods with limited air to punish us for what we've done.

*sigh* we were so cool until then...

That one makes the yearbook for great Mantidforum quotes in 2009 when Nasty Bugger said "Humans will at that point be petrified mantis dung the fact that humans are already full of it merely reinforces my theory/hypothesis". (Everything else was hilarious too! I suppose you're too old to be the reincarnation of George Carlin.)

More than likely, any evolving that mantises do will be done in captivity since only the Chinese mantis will exist in nature after 300 years from now (thanks only to the gardening industry). Meanwhile, I'm sure my grandchildrens' grandchildren will still be around, paying off the national debt and maybe my neighbor's house.

I'm about a half century too late for that Peter :) My dad is only about a year younger than Phil.

Some would say my comments would indicate that my maturity level would be that of someone young enough to be the reincarnate of Georgie boy :)

I only wish I could be as funny as that guy.

I read an article on him a couple weeks ago that said he really worked hard at being funny, and memorizing all his stuff, not your stuff, which is really $#!+, but his stuff... but it said he really didn't have it flying off the tip of his tongue all the time but that he really worked hard at making it look that way. Not to diminish his doings, he was totally cool by me.

I did have the class clown album, and i actually walked into the house right before the very first saturday night live hosted by George was aired, and watched it.

I had been down at the racetrack, which is where we partied on saturday nights, sitting on a hill across from the track watching the races and partying, so I was primed up for that episode :)

I was only 14 years old then, but I remember it well... :) kinda I loved ol' George.

That has to be one of the better compliments I've received. That and all the women loving my curly hair :)

Wasn't sure if I'd upset anyone by going a bit off topic, kinda.... B)
