Introducing mantids to my landlords

I need to tell my new landlords about my mantids. I will take two of them to show them off. I know what to say....they are silent, dont do damage, make dry pellets, dont run loose except when I take them out of thier cages etc...

The problem is who do I take? I have a blind multispina ( calm so good choice) a ghost ( fascinating and small) , crippled madagascan marbled (very sweet) , a huge female giant shield (very sweet and calm).

Any thought are welcome. Who would you take?

Why do u have to tell them? its not gonna be good, they are not going to want extra flies around, u can tell them they wont be any, but not gonna believe u. If they start searching, and happen here, they are going to see some use roaches for food, and any landlord will throw u out on your head, and will really not believe u.. bad idea grannyma says.... :boat:

If I dont tell I will be kicked out for sure. I had told them about the silkmoth caterpillars I raised and they were very open about them. A friend here suggested I bring my blind girl. She is sweet and not too big.

I hide my bugs anytime my landlord has to come in, my closet is literally 100% full when my apartment needs repair.

I would bring the ghost because they are quite fascinating! And honesty is always the best way to go! If you tell them about your Mantids and just the pros being that there are very few cons if any "depending on your views" and if they were open to silkmoths they should have no problem with your Mantids. If they are not open to your Mantids then your rental better be Arachnid free!

Stress they are considered beneficial insects that eat all the pests that annoy most humans. That line always works for me, even when I happen to be staying at a hotel that doesn't normally allow pets. =p

If they already know about the mantids, just don't mention the feeders, if that is possible.

A lot of people here are saying not to tell them about feeders, when you could just say you make 2 trips a week to the pet store from mealworms or superworms and dont culture anything. That way they believe you dont have a bunch of flies/roaches whatever in your room.

I would say bring the Ghost and the multispina. The Ghost is a very common choice because of how exotic it looks, and I think if you're landlord is open to it they would like the look of the Ghost the most. The multispina shows that you love these animals like they would love their dog or cat, you still take care of them and even go the extra mile when they cant take care of themselves. I think those 2 combined show you're a responsible and caring person who has a more unique choice in the pets you love and take care of.

About half the people I've shown my mantids to thought they eat leaves!

Many people that I have spoken with think that feeding insects to my insects is disgusting.

It is probably the reason that most people, who at first like the mantis, don't end up keeping any as pets.

SUCCESS! I took my ghost Dragon and my blind girl and the man in thoffice laughed! He thought they are great and so did the lady.

To say I was relieved is an understatement! I am so happy! No more stress from having to hide the bugs! No more panic attacks every time the manager comes in!

That's great! I was crossing my fingers for you... Must be such a relief! Did you go in there with a "prepared statement" or did you just wing it? :lol: If I had to do that, I would have spent all day trying figure out the best way to convince them: what to say/what to omit, how to handle any questions, etc.

Yeah, I had a list of things in mind. What to say, not to say. A close friend went with me. When I heard that laugh I knew everything was ok. They really liked Dragon. , one of my landlords took pictures! He was charmed by Dragon. I will take my giant shield in to visit tomorrow.
