I've been advised this is an unhealthy culture. It was purchased from a reputable company on eBay who claim never have any issues with mites or mold. I would appreciate an expert opinion as it's very wet and dark in places, definitely mold in my opinion.

I can’t really tell with that pic... there is still larva so Your still going to get ffs.

Probably not but I’ve had moldy cultures still produce massive amounts of flies.

The company is happy that mould is normal within 5 days. I can't use this to start other colonies because it will transmit mould. Is there a reliable UK source for clean fruit flies?

Really? I didn’t know you could transmit mold through a fruit fly.

Im in the USA so I’ve got no idea. A simple google search could probably find you some companies.

Mould spores generate more mould, so it hitched a ride on a host. It was a simple Google search that led me this usually reputable company, I'd used them for years for crickets, never fruit fly.
