Hey all!
I am really stoked to buy my first Mantid. I am looking for 2nd Instars in a species that's easy to keep for a beginner. I am thinking something that molts without dying too easily.
My primary candidates are:
*Chinese Mantis - Old Classic, right?
*Ghost Mantis - I hear they live well in groups
*Shield Mantis - I hear they are very hardy
Some have suggested Bruner's mantis, but their small size intimidates me. That has "died during molt" written all over it, but I could be wrong.
If you are selling Mantids that fit this bill please let me know.
I am in the NYC area, so finding good feeders might be an issue as well. I have some fruit flies from a vermiculture experiment that might do, but I think a larger insect that can take down easily purchased feeder animals would be ideal. I hear crickets are terrible but... maybe meal worms? Small cockroaches?
Reading the care sheets like crazy.
Thanks!
