I've been thinking about breeding. No, not myself though... that probably crosses my mind too often. What can be done, aside from giving the female some food prior to breeding in order to lower the chances of her attacking the male? Some ideas:

1. Put the female in the refrigerator/freezer to slow her down for 10 minutes.

2. Use some kind of chemical to knock the female out or make her real drowzy.

3. Take her out to dinner, buy her a few glasses of wine (and maybe a shot of tequilla) and then bring her home.

4. Use some kind of thread/string to hold her head down and out of the way of the male.

I know most of you experts have your old tried and true methods but I'm trying to think outside of the box here. Any ideas?

Another question: in any species/sub-species of Mantid, can you cross-breed them? Artificially?

Thanks!

If you follow these 3 simple steps, it will greatly reduce the chances of your males will be eaten when trying to mate them.

1. Feed the female up to the point where she completly refuses food. If she's full she will less likely be tempted to eat her mate.

2. Make sure your adult female is at least 3 weeks to a month old as an adult. I know most species are ready to mate just after two weeks, but this will reduce the risk of the female not being ready and going crazy when the male tries to mount her.

3. Make sure you give them enough space to mate. I usally put mating mantids in a plant in my kitchen. I know some of you cant really have your mantids roaming free, but this gives the males the best chance of escape if need be.

1. Absolutely not.

2. Absolutely not.

3. Wine probably isn't good for them.

4. No.

The risk is low to moderate anyways. Feeding her is only a little effective. If she wants to eat him she will regardless of how much she has had to eat. The best advice I can give you is to mate them in the open. I mate most mantids in very large enclosures or loose in the room. Loose in the room is what I do most often unless I have several males then I just don't care. Start them out on your curtains or a house plant or some other surface. This way the male can fly away when done. If she reaches around and gets him after he has started it won't matter but they most often get him when he is getting on.

OGIGA suggested in the topic "Safe Sex Breeding" a day or 2 ago, the use of a cone to prevent the female from attacking the male let alone seeing him. It requires some effort but it looks funny & effective.

Now isn't there a alcohol made from honey how about give her a drink of some alcohol/honey  and then start the mateing , but then she would be a lush "ha ha", or is that sci-fi geek poping its odd little green head out and looking around for a drink  Ha ha.

Danny

Here's a dum ? how many times duz every one mate there female's?

Usually once. Twice after a few ooths if possible.

I field this one, if I may?

It is possible to cross-breed mantids of the same genus but their offspring will be frail and most likely shooting blanks;)

If it was possible to successfully breed two species together, I would have made a Giant Asian-Devil-Ghost-Boxer Mantid a long time ago

lol cool, thanks for the info.

Just because those techniques may work for you, it does not mean they will work for your mantises. ;)
