No rhyme or reason behind it... and it seems like the more you do "just right" the more die without an obvious cause.

What environmental conditions were you keeping him under? What temperature day and night? Humidity levels? Photoperiod? Ventilation?

I think what happened was the flies he had weren't filling him up enough

he was very small and I was feeding him fruit flies

anyway, at least my female's big and strong atm
