Must be weird. My Chinese male ATTACK ANYTHING IT SEES, even me! I'm here sitting at my PC typing this right now as he stares at my fingers from his cage smacking the walls of it as if he wanted to grab and eat it. His appetite and aggression is by far the most apparent I've ever seen in any mantis, even the female Heirodula I had many years ago. I remember when cleaning his enclosure I had him sitting on a fake plant in one of my bathrooms and I when i tried nudging his backside to get him to crawl on my hand he'd always turn around and try to fight me. I think it's adorable though :D

Anyone ever had a male like this?

My giant African mantis does the same thing and always hungry. He keeps taping the glass saying I want more!  Does not like to sit on my hand.   When I try to hand feed a BB fly it would rip the fly out of the tweezers leaving the legs behind.

:)  He sounds great! I have never had a male like this, but I guess it can happen!

Well now he seems to just run around his enclosure with his wings unfolded and smack at the glass. I offered a roach to him but I don't think he paid it attention - maybe this is him wanting to mate?

Update - he's doing the thing I said above but much more extreme, what should I do? Should I let him go?

Another update - he laid upside down with his wings motionless but still fluttering. I think his time has come, sadly!

Bob ( H. menbranacea) was his whole life a bad eater, but mostly slapping at prey prey i gave him. He gave a lot of threat poses too. But he was a beautiful mantis.

How old is he?

Is he still alive?
He was about 5-6 months old. He's been an adult for about two months now.

As for if he's still alive... sadly no. I tried to see if he would walk around normally on his own but all he would do was flutter his wings and barely move. I thought I'd use him as a meal for another mantis instead of just have him rot in the container. Really sad how it ended like this, maybe he went crazy from not mating? Then again, I wouldn't really know. I just saw him in that classic upside down - curled legs pose so I didn't want his body to just rot .

Sadly females live longer than males. He was about the right age for his gender to die. females can live 4-6 months after adulthood where as males usually live around 2 months.

I am so sorry that you lost him! He sounded like a great mantis. :(
