In October I caught a gravid mantis religiosa. Shortly after catching her she made an ooth which I stored in the refrigerator for 3 months. I took it out to hatch 7 weeks ago and I'm still waiting. I thought they would hatch in 4-6 weeks, is it unusual for them to take this long? I'm keeping it at 80 degrees by day and 70 at night and misting as needed.

It's my understanding that Mantis religiosa oothecae require a winter diapause of at least 6-8 weeks. There is a chance that it may be a dud as Extrememantid suggested. If you go out now and look for oothecae, you will be able to bring them indoors and have them incubate because they have been subjected to enough cold.

He said he diapaused it for 3 months..

Yep, it was a dud. I dissected it the other day and while there were plenty of eggs none were developing. I'm surprised that a wild caught gravid female would lay an infertile ooth.

It would have hatched sooner if it was diapaused for at least 6-8 weeks. I had one hatch out before with no diapause and i only had a few weak young.
