I think it would be good to have a memorial section for our forum. Arachnophiles has one and several other forums I know. There are lot of us who write about thier mantis when they pass.

What does everyone else think?

Personally I think that this over attachment for an insect is disturbing to say the least. But that's just me. There are limits

Yes Dom, I am very overattached to my bugs! I have no children or family. They are my my family! I love them and tell them so every day. There is no difference between me and those who love thier dogs or cats. Pets are family, no matter what they .

I bet that there are other members who feel the same as I do.

If they didn't there would not be so many suppliers of feeders and treats. I bought the Bugnapper So I could enoy feeding yummy moths to my mantids. I enjoy thier enjoyment. It kills me that both Martha and Hopper are not here now.

I know how you feel, Sticky. Especially when I first started this hobby, I got very attached to every mantis I had. I cried when my first mantis passed, and I've gotten teary-eyed for many others. But I know a lot of people in this hobby see them as just really cool insects, not family. And I must admit, I don't get attached to every mantis like I used to. Now I usually have my favorites out of the bunch, and those are the ones that make me sad when they go.

Cruel, cold Dom ! To accuse someone like Nikki Mantis (The Great & Powerful) of being an "insect" is delusional ! When Nikki died, there was an obituary published and she's buried in Twin Cedars Cemetery (the pall bearers had it pretty easy). Disturbing eh? Mad, are we, eh?? Ahhhhhhh ha ha ha ha ha ha .....

There are enough forum members that would use it so a memorial section would be a nice addition. With a separate subforum then maybe us bug lovers would be less annoying to some of the other members so they wouldn't feel the need to question our mental health every time someone starts a thread over the passing of one of their precious mantises.

Hmm, I pretty much agree with Dom. I like insects and all but please please please do not compare them to dogs or cats. That is waaaaay out the ball park. I really like my mantids but I will not hesitate to empty a whole can of raid into a cockroach's face... Plus dogs and cats will show you affection that an insect simply cannot. So yeah.. Will I be bummed when my mantids die, sure; but I knew the lifespan way before I even go one. If you don't realize that then your setting yourself up for a whole mess load of depression and tears not worth being shed over -_-

I do tolerate better all the love people give to mammals, which are more intelligent so I understand but in some cases its' just too much. The line between Human and animal fades and people start treating animals almost like a Human being. That's what disturbs me the most.

I have a dog, lots of cats (5 just 3 weeks old), 2 chickens, 2 frogs, 4 fish, 1 crayfish, 4 sticks insects (and tens of eggs), 1 Geomantis larvoides plus Mantis Religiosa nymphs yet to be born and finally an ant farm as pets. Now I do know what it is to be surrounded by pets and how to treat them well. Obviously I will get upset when I lose an animal, specially a mammal and I'll miss that animal but I won't get all emotional because I lost a mantis! A freaking insect for god sake.

I know there are a lot of members who feel like you. That's why I do not post very often in this forum. Many topics are just too disturbingly emotional and so I tend to avoid them.

Yes. Yes, you are mad, :p

I was speechless when I saw your memorials. Both Nikki and Perseus' memorials.

Sorry if I will offend you in any way but I'm having trouble to understand if those were some impressive trolling moments or pure frightening truths, lol

+1 to your post, Aphid Herder

THis is freakin hilarious xD Digger has to be trolling. "the pall bearers had it pretty easy"

You go Digger! I know I will cry when they go, but as I told a lady at a diner I love, The joy they give me makes the hurt worth it when they go.

Not all are favorites, the faves will get a decorated coffin. the others will feed the plants of my new garden.

BTW: I cried when I learned Nikki Mantis died. She was a superstar!

There are so many people who look down on my "pets" being mantises. I am glad there is a forum where I can come and share and learn and know there are other humans that think of insects as "pets" or just interesting creatures without being judged :)

And somehow putting a picture of the departed mantis on the coffin. I smell $$$ :p
I took a picture of Sticky, and using a shipping label program I printed one label with a larger photo, put it on his box and sprayed a shellack onto it. Then glued little paper roses around it. Very simple. Ask the customer for a pic and do the same thing. I will post a link to the picture.

I saw some in a store in Bangor. They were rather fragile. I like the boxes I found online better. They are more sturdy and easier to pack together when I moved.
