I like the Memorial section idea, Sticky... but I'm still new to this forum so I'm not sure how everything works and what stance the majority of people on the site -including the administrators- have on mantids as companions or as a fun hobby/cool insect (I'm in the former camp). But I wanted to add that I think Krissim Klaw had a really good point. :)

It's a fun hobby with cool insects for me. It also alows me to vary the diet of my chameleons. I will not be posting any memorials. I think it is a waste of time. I'd be making posts almost daily. I feel for all the people who cry for a lost mantis (not really, come on), but crying for a bug just isn't my bag.

I think rather than placing them in miniature coffins or burying them, you can infinitely admire their beauty and memories by learning how to dry them and pin them up.

Something I need to learn instead of feeding them to my turtles.

That is a good idea, pinning them. The problem with mine is usually when they die they are missing feet, tattered wing etc... I have done wild silkmoths. I want them to be perfect, nothing missing or damaged.

Ancient egyptians,at some period, would mumify mantis and put them in small sarcophagus made out of clay.

At least you know how to do it. :) I have yet to learn the craft hahah

Dead lifeless mantis eyes aren't for me so I'll stick with burying over pinning.

Also for all of you stating you feel sorry for those of us who morn the loss of a mere bug, don't be. Contrary to what it seems some of you think, we are not depressed, mopy, emo individuals. Yes, we are willing to form a deeper connection with them but for the extra pain and sorrow we feel when they are lost we also get that much more pleasure and enjoyment out of keeping them. I am not and will never be ashamed over the ability to form a connection with an insect. To say I know my mantises on a individual level. They never fail to bring a smile to my face and they bring an endless supply of joy and laughter to my everyday life. I have never once regretted my time spent with them.

I started pinning mine since 2010 but even with great care they will eventually lose color, which is a shame.

Actually I like when I have crippled mantids for pinning. It's like they have a history

I like to watch Mantids and how they behave. I'm always waiting for something new to observe. But I'm not interested in bonding with them. I don't even know how to do that with an insect.

Although I think all those emotions for an insect are weird, I do respect your way, specially because you can do something I can't.

Edit: sorry for double post

Exactly!! I could not pin someone I love. Especially one I give extra special care to.

+ 1 :)

I'm pretty sure the average person considers keeping mantises or other insects for the sake of keeping bugs pretty weird to begin with.

Being normal is overrated. :tt2:

I know that keeping bugs is already weird but I didn't know there was a deeper level of weirdness in it until I joined this forum :D

I have a dog, lots of cats (5 just 3 weeks old), 2 chickens, 2 frogs, 4 fish, 1 crayfish, 4 sticks insects (and tens of eggs), 1 Geomantis larvoides plus Mantis Religiosa nymphs yet to be born and finally an ant farm as pets. N

-------------- And, who's the crazy one around here.....?? :eek:nline2long:

I was speechless when I saw your memorials. Both Nikki and Perseus' memorials.

--- Digger: Speechless, Dom because you had a lump in your throat and tears swelling like oceans in your eyes. !!

Sorry if I will offend you in any way

--- Digger: It takes a hel* of a lot to offend me ! Nothing on this BBS could come within a light year. Fire away !

...but I'm having trouble to understand if those were some impressive trolling moments or pure frightening truths, lol

--- Digger: A little bit of both.
+1 to your post, Aphid Herder

Stop picking on Dom people. He is just voicing his opinion that he does not want a memorials section. I happen to agree with him. I think it is just a little to much for me.

Don't worry, even my praying mantises think I am pretty weird.

But people already post memorials regularly. Having a separate section would mean instead of flooding the general forum with them there would be a separate subforum so those of you not into it could avoid them if you wanted by simply not clicking on that subforum.

I appreciate your concern, Gripen but Digger is pretty much right. No hard feelings, just opinions and fun, lol.

If everyone respects each others' opinion, everything will be just fine
