Just take a plastic container and cut the bottom three inches off. A container the diameter of a 32 oz insect cup works. Bury this flush with the ground. Add a couple inches of beer. The slugs are attracted to the beer and can't get back out.
My neighbor used to use a similar technique. The only difference is he used to use soda. He said the caffine in the soda would paralize the slugs, and they would fall in and drown. After a few days they would turn white and deteriorate in the coke.

Yes they do, but you have to run the coke through a coffee filter before you can drink it, though they tend to give some body to those pathetic American lite beers (beer + lotsa water = lite beer).

I'm quite glad that I find beer disgusting.

I'll stick to my other poison, grape Swisher Sweets.

If you can't find beauty in slugs, don't move to Oregon. My wife walks from the driveway to the front door with her eyes closed, afraid that she'll see one skewered on the tip of her high heeled boot when she gets in the house!

I like slugs. Never thought to feed one to a mantis, but does anybody know if they are edible to humans? I'm almost hungry enough right now.

Egads, Peter. You're a braver man than me to even think of it. I wouldn't be able to get over the "ick" factor. Then there's the problem of seasoning with salt, hehe. :p

Yeah, I'm a little different when it comes to food. If I knew it was safe and how to prepare it I would actually love to try them! Escargot is delicious. I pick them off my plants in the spring and the few I see in summer, but I don't kill them. I just throw them over the fence into the bug-hating neighbor's yard. (just kidding...I just throw them over to a non-garden part of my yard, but my neighbors don't like bugs much. I figure my yard is the one safe place for bugs in the neighborhood...except when I want to spoil a mantis with wild caught meals or I'm blacklighting for native stuff.) I know it sounds gross to most, but I actually think the texture of slugs would be quite appealing...something between good tripe and clams. Because they are all over up here, I don't keep them as pets. I do enjoy watching their habits by flashlight on backyard expeditions though!

Actual excerpt from an email my wife sent me in November of 2008:

"Can you please sweep off the front walk way tomorrow if it is not raining??? Pretty please! I almost had a stroke when I got home and had to walk in the dark from the car to the house just knowing that I was stabbing slugs with my high heeled shoes and dragging them into the house with me!! YUCK! I had to make Hailey go out to the car and get the rest of the stuff cuz I was too grossed out!"

Finally, a photo my mom took in October of a leatherleaf type slug in her yard in Mexico...

lol at Peter. Go out and pop one in your mouth. I can tell you that their insides are pretty disgusting looking. When my turtles eat them the insides always come out.
