I like to name my mantids, and I was hoping to name my two little Ghosts Dexter and Rita. BUT, it looks like I have two females. So I'm hoping for some help naming them!

Here's a few pictures of my sweeties! They show up quite nicely on my green blanket. :D

I should have some ghost nymphs as soon as they hatch! I don't think I'll be naming mine though.

@Katnapper: Aw, what a cute kitty! I love calicoes! I have four cats; an orange one, a brown tabby, a black long-hair, and a black short hair.

@Tier: They look like females to me. Are they males? This is my first time with Ghosts.

@Mr. Mantid: Awesome! You're going to love them. :) I like to name all my mantids, but I have to wait a while until I know their genders. :p

I think I might take a more systematic approach to naming them, ghost 001, ghost 002, ghost, 003.. etc. ha ha i know im boring :p

@Mr. Mantid: Boooooring! lol, I'm just kidding!

@hibicusmile: Are they males? It DOES look like he/she is dancing! Hee hee!

Deby,

Ghosts kind of fool me until a molt or two later then in your picks.

macro shots help, but I would just wait it out till you can clearly tell by eye.

I should also have plenty of extra ooths soon so if you need any extra ghosts just hit me a PM.

btw: here is my guess...male on the right, female on the left.

I would agree with your guess 95% ;)

The 'horn' and shield (pronotum) shapes usually give clues to ghost mantis gender.

Narrow 'horn' - male

Wider 'horn' - female

Shield with triangle shape - female

Shield with diamond shape - male

The pictures wasn't clear but looks like a pair. Male on the left and female on the right.

When I look at them right next to each other, they look identical in horn and shield. I think I need to wait for a few more molts to identify their genders. BUT, Yen is probably right. He IS the mantis expert.

if it is identical then it could be of the same gender. It would be easier after a few molts.

I am not a expert, never study anything related to entomology before. I just like to share what I have experience with this wonderful insect.

Blinky, Inky, Pinky, and Clide. For those of you that are not fimilar with Pacman. Those are the ghosts names that chase Pacman around. :p

@Yen: You sure seem like an expert. ;) Thanks for your help, by the way.

@ismart: I was actually thinking about that! Sadly, I only have two... now if I had FOUR, that would be perfect!
