I am a pet person, I need strange creatures to keep as companions and take care of. Without a pet I feel disconnected from nature. Of course I can have pets in my apartment, for a small fee of 300 dollars a year on top of regular pet fees. So for a year now I have been looking at cats on animal shelters dreaming  of one day being a cat owner. But I was thinking too small.

One day I was leaving my apartment and the weather had started taking a turn for the worse. Cold, windy and raining. I looked down to my feet and not an inch away from my foot was a praying mantis. It was lying still as if it was frozen :helpsmilie: . So I took it inside to warm it up.

For her home, I had recently finished off a huge container of red vines and so I cleaned it, lined it with paper towels and poked holes everywhere. Three days went buy, yet it lay in the container lethargic. So knowing nothing about mantids but having a strong desire to help, I found out that mantids molt. I also saw that they molted upside down. So I did the stupidest thing ever. I taped it’s four legs to a paper towel and hung it upside down. Well, it seemed to work it started moving a lot more. However, when five hours it looked the same as it had before I took it off. I was pretty sure it was a bad idea to tape it up like that.So then the mantis started pooping :poop: out black gooey stuff. I thought they might be eggs. So this time I made a hammock so she could lay on her back.

Well a day went buy like that and her upper body was turning a brownish black tinge and she kept moving slower and slower. I also happened across an article saying the black poop was a sign of a deadly infection. So I put her outside to let her die in mother nature were she had originated. And after reading the different methods of euthanasia. I think I made the right choice. I am still saddened about the horrible ordeal. I really wanted to revive it.

I love  mantids and now know a lot more about them, I read everything I can find on them. After this I am going to create a post for some suggestions on where to get a 3 instar mantis. As my skills increase I hope to have every wonderful experience with these guys.

Thanks

Oh I am the lucky one. Most apartments have a no pet policy. So at least my neighbors have pets. :D
Seriously ? And you have to pay fees to have pet when it's autorized ?

Here you can have pets as you want, just sometimes you have to ask the owner of the building for dogs but cats, rodents, fishtanks and terrarium are automaticaly autorized. I just pay a bit more my home insurance (obligation to have one in Switzerland) for the fishtanks, because of the risk of the water if they broke.

The fees in the US are only on pet-approving apartments... if you own an actual house, there aren't fees to own a pet. But in apartments, many of them (as you are renting it and do not own it) will not allow any animals... and those that do will require fees or extra money and will sometimes do checks to make sure you're taking care of the pet and keeping up with cleaning codes and such. For example, someone I knew in HS I found out recently she was kicked out of her apartment because she didn't adhere to certain codes with her animals. o.o

And I wish you the best of luck with your new mantis when you get one, Chica!

And I'm attempting to learn French.. XD

My mom have a PHD (I think it's the correct word) in English, she spoke to me in English since I'm born and my mother in law was an English teacher too so my husband speaks fluently in English (much better than me), he made his journalism licence about the death penalty in US (specifically about how the Swiss press speaks about executions and the repercussions in our medias). We both watch mostly movies and series in English too. I'm just dyslexic, so sometimes I express myself a bit weirdly and my English is really academic, I need to learn more the common language. It's why it's nice to be here :)

I'm totally out of topic...XD

hi, welcome. My apartments have the same fees. i have two cats and we just keep the a secret. they are smart too, when they here a knock at the door they go hide under the bed until they hear if its someone they know or not. i also had to disassemble one of my fish tanks because its against the rules now to have more than one. i just started trying to raise mantids myself. been catching them since i was a kid but i am going to start to keep different kinds. good luck and welcome to the hobby. this is a great site to ask questions and learn. and everyone is friendly.

Ok, I understand better. Maybe not a bad thing to have those checks...

Yeah it isn't.

This particular person rarely cleaned up after the cats or turtles and it was disgusting, I saw the apartment first hand when I was asked to help clear it out by my best friend (her family knew the person pretty well)... it smelled like cat urine and dirty turtle water and it was.. interesting to say the least helping clean it out. o.o

And yes I wouldn't mind seeing a picture of the rescued girl of Chica's as well

Welcome. Sorry about having to witness that, they are more than just bugs to a lot of people. Good luck with what you choose to get, and know (like most hobbies) it is addicting and can be as fun as you make it. Spend a lot of money on big exotic tanks and plants, or use your red vines container and some sticks. Either way, do your homework on a species you decide on. :)

Welcome.

My apartment has dorm rules even though I live off campus. No pets. Fish are ok as long as they are in a small fish bowl. I told management that I had a (1) praying mantis. Little white lie I had 20 somthing. They approved it though and they have seen my little mantis zoo but haven't said anything.
