Hi everyone!

I joined the other day when I ordered my first Mantis pet. It arrived last night - a Sphodromantis Blue Flash. So exciting - I always played with mantises in the yard as a kid. Anyhow.. it looked fine, was thirsty. The flies that were shipped with it seem a tad big. It tried to catch one a few times but it was a little bigger than it's abdomen sized (they don't look like fruit flies, they have wings, but don't fly and look like tiny housefiles.).

So.. I hunted down a smaller fly, couldn't sleep till I knew it had something to eat. That went well.

Today.. trying to find some fruit flies. I put my mantis / with the small ship cup inside a too large enclosure till I made a medium sized one. And it is hanging off the tiny cup MOLTING! I am so worried, was not expecting this so soon! I think it will be fine, it is almost to

the end, It's only been an hour so I don't dare even breathe too close to it's container.

I emailed the supplier because I am wondering if this is too soon? It was supposed to be an L2, does this make it an L3 already? I thought this only happened every few weeks. I tend to worry too much! :D

Ok, wish us luck!!

Welcome. :)

It should be fine.

Just leave it alone for today as it hardens it's cuticle.

When they are young, the first few molts can take only around a week to 10 days.

Thanks! It's looking just fine so I'm very happy & relieved!!

I just read this:

"You might notice that your mantis "bats" at prey to scare it away."

That is what it was doing last night and I thought it was afraid of it's prey. LOL

Glad I took the fly out, I was trying to get it to eat because I felt bad it just spent 3 days in a priority mail box.

Crazy timing I guess.

welcome :)

Mantids molt when they're ready. It's really hard to anticipate. You dont have to worry, unless you bump the container, you didn't ever mist it, or if the mantis falls whilst molting.

Welcome! Yup like Adrienne said let him/her be so she can harden...its a good thing It didn't molt in transit! (you dodged a bullet ;) )

All the best,

Andrew

The mantis looks very healthy, and glad you are enjoying it! the mantis will molt when it needs to, but generally it will molt every week or two. Itll be fine. Just make sure it has height, and and humidity, and itlll be fine. Also itll stop eating before it molts, then meake sure you remove all food from its container. ;)
