Hello,

I saw some mantis and phasmids for sale at a local show.  I picked up a cool stick insect.  I wasn't really that interested in the mantis.  They were all tiny and not really that impressive.  Then I started reading up on them.  Next show I picked up a couple of tiny Ghosts and a tiny Dead leaf Mantis, D. lobata.  So far every one has shed once in my care.  I have never seen the dead leaf eat but, the fruit flies disrepair.

There are some really cool mantis out there.  I like that they are relatively small and don't take up that much space and with their short lifespans you can try out different species.   I look forward to learning more about this hobby.

Welcome, Gary! 👊😎

I'm jealous. I've never been to such a show. I do have a bunch of mantids though, and yes, they are amazing to keep and observe.

I have a D. truncata. She seems very sedentary, but I have seen her haul a$$ getting a cricket. Great species as they look so amazing!

I also have a gang of ghosts. I love their crazy look, with their crowns and all!

Funny that, about their size being a negative. To me, most of the fun is gone once they reach adulthood. Males just have one thing on their mind.

And females start with all their weird business. Having said that, I do look forward to taking my shot at breeding.

Upon first introduction its hard to tell that those misquote sized nymphs are going to grow up into a really amazing looking mantis if you don't already know what you are looking at.

The biggest shocker for me were my Miomantis caffra males. I have two.

As nymphs, they were hands-down the most aggressive nymphs I've kept to date. They would track and descend. They'd zero in and take the prey item.

Now that they're adults, they won't take more than a few bites of an offered bit of larva. They've had black soldier flies in their cups for a couple days now. Flies are still in there, alive and well.

How underwhelming. LoL!

Welcome :)

Mantids are cool insects.  I have a bunch and new ones (very little ones) will be arriving soon today.  Show us some pic of your mantids?
