I am a fish keeper at heart, and also I am in to snakes. Growing up I took Shaolin lessons and learned about the praying mantis. Since then they have always fascinated me. Never thought about owning or keeping them since I thought they are like moths. Apparently not!, and they also help keep yards and veggie gardens cleans! Also a noob and rookie I like the orchid mantid. I live in Mass, USA. Can anyone help me acquire a pair or an ooth?

Welcome.

Orchids are not easy species to keep. I would recommend trying a more beginner species first.

Hierodula majuscula is a good choice. Creobroter and Phyllocrania are good too.

Thanks for the welcoming! The phyllocranias are wicked nice, and the creobroter deff have some nice patterns.

Hello from CA. Welcome. You are getting enough good suggestions. I started with Ghosts and that was a nice choice. They are anything but boring.

Welcome. I suggest ghost mantis or a bigger species like H. majuscule or H. membranacea. The ghosts come in various colors , the green females are the best, and the bigger mantids are just fun all around.

hello welcome to the hobby!

What would be a nice attractive in color beginner sp. that you would recommend?
My first species was deroplatys lobata. They are a dead leaf type from the same region as orchids, females are much larger and have a unique shield. Eat wide ranges of live food and have a super intimidating threat pose. im selling L2 nymphs for a dollar or entire oothecca for 35$

Thank you everyone for all your help and advice guiding me towards a beginners mantid.

Btw Axolotls are not just cool, they are awesome

Hello arias! Since no one else suggested this yet, rhombodera (shield mantids) are also very good for beginners and they are very beautiful, with many having a slight blue green color!

Welcome to Mantid Forum from Arizona! I'd like to suggest the Iris Oratoria which is also a very easy mantis to feed and care for. Their threat display is beautiful and they have some beautiful coloring that develops on their forceps. I have ooths for sale for $25 plus shipping. Just send me a PM if you are interested.

Once again welcome, look forward to seeing you around. :)
