Ive been waiting for a few weeks now for my mantis to lay an ooth, with little sign of it coming. I was wondering do I need to place a solid object such as a stick or small log in the tank so that the mantis can attach the ooth to it?

 
You should put a stick in for the mantis to lay the ooth on. If you do not, however, then the mantis will still lay in another part of the cage, probably less conveniently for you :D

 
You don't have to. Most of the time they will make it on the lid.
