Hi. ive just had two orchid ooths hatch out, but im not as pleased as i should be cos i got only 8 nymphs from one and 7 from the other!

they were the first ooths laid by two separate females which were mated by different males, and kept in seperate tubs at about 20c and reasonable humidity. i dont think more will come out of either. is this just a normal hatch rate for orchids, esp the first ooths? they were both very long ooths. i have 4 more ooths to hatch out and im hoping for a better result.

Sounds like your incubation temp was to low too, I incubate mine at around 26C daytime temps with a drop to about 20-22C at night, also how often were you spraying?? You should be pleased tho that you got a hatch and there may be more to follow if they only hatched with in the past couple of days.

thanx for replies

I think you need to give them more time Orchid can have in large Ooths 100-200 thats what I have heard
thanx i hope so. i was expecting more on lines of a ghost mantis hatch rate, say about 35 as they are both long thin ooths. but then again, they are much bigger ooths so maybe you right, im sure about 100 could fit in there easily.

well i am pleased in a way, as its enough for keep me going, but i wanted to sell a few too. :p one ooth hatched 2 days ago, and the first about a week ago so more might follow i supose. they are next to a big heatmat, so the temp might be higher than 20c (im going on 20c in bottom corner of cage, not where the tubs were, ) and i keep misting enough to make sure condensation remains on the sides. most of my shield and violin mantis ooths hatched fine in the same cage setup (my violins were not kept in tubs though, so not as humid). and another thing is they seem very healthy babies and i cant understand if they survived why others didnt. its almost like there was only 7 eggs in them. also, the females were sisters, i wonder if it is a genetic disorder or something. bit of a long shot i know

i am going to put them nearer the heat mat.

Normally they hatch out a lot. Don't throw the ooths out.
