Today is Earth Overshoot Day

In less than nine months, we have now used more natural resources than what it takes the planet 12 months to produce. For the remainder of 2013, we will be living on resources borrowed from future generations. This yearEarth Overshoot Daythe approximate date human resource demands exceed nature's budgetfell on August 20. Two days earlier than last year. In fact, since 2001, Overshoot Day has moved ahead by an average of 3 days per year. And by 2050, the global population is expected to reach 9 billiononly increasing pressure on Earth's natural resources. On this finite planet, we need to change the way we think about everything, but especially about where and how we live, work and travel, along with what and how much we consume.Overshoot Day is a bold indication that now is the time to make a change. Small actions can make a big difference. We each play an important role in creating a world where we all live within our ecological limits. -WWF

I figured I would share this info with this forum...wonder what our world would be like if we actually didn't overshoot...

We can't really fix overpopulation.... but the things we can, no one will bc they are more concerned with their personal image and materialistic nature.

Of course we can. At least in theory. But people don't like to be told how many children they can have. But that of course isn't the only issue, due to advances in health care people are living longer and people who would have died from disease or injury in the past are now surviving.

Overpopulation and the amount of resources we use are complicated issues but one that will have dire consequences for us as a species. I firmly believe we will cause our own extinction. The analogy I like to use is; the earth is like a piece of bread and the human species is the mold, and the bread is running out.

Some of you may be familiar with the term carrying capacity. I believe we have artificially increased the carrying capacity for our own species. The vast majority of people don't even think twice about where the stuff they consume comes from or how it gets to them. I think there are dark days ahead as our population swells and resources become scarce. There for sure will be water wars in the not too distant future. Sometimes I wish I was born in an earlier generation. This topic is one reason my wife and I have decided not to have children. Seems like a big step but in the end we're all worm food so I hope to do some good while here with making as minimal an impact as possible. Every person should have just one child in order to replace themselves, nothing more. Many will disagree with imposing birth limits but I feel it is something that should have already been done.

Sometimes I think that i was born a couple centuries late :p

Sounds dumb, but i feel like i would do much better and be much more "comfortable" in an earlier time. I'm not really sure how to phrase it correctly, so i apologize if that sounded a bit strange.

Rick that's basically what I meant about "really" ...I agree with you that our carrying capacity has long been reached...but as humans we have artificially increased it. If even 1% more of humans knew about this...some change would be made...but the ingnorance is too great, sadly.

humans r going to cause their own extinction

I wrote a story about it but I wont share it because its 1:almost 30 pages and 2:very graphic, violent, and kinda messed up

but I will share an idea in the story

we humans need to sterilize certain people, in overpopulated regions and such

we should also encourage birth control

If I had a ton of money I would pay people to get sterilized

also, we should have radiation pants that sterilize all those guys who like to wear saggy pants

there are 7 billion people in our population

we should make do with what we have :D

I know it is a very "un-american" thing to do, but i believe the government should bring a child limit into effect. Of course this wouldn't happen in the United States, but it could help.

i agreeu know how many kids i see going to waste? plenty of ghetto or project kids here getting pregnant or becoming junkies and dropping out of school and whatnot

the less kids people have the less we will have this problem

Without deliberately trying to sound cold and uncaring... After years in emergency medicine I am all for sterilization. I have a very logical and scientific mind. We are overpopulating the earth and destroying our resources, less people... Less destruction. Period. Logical and to the point.

My whole family line dies with me.. In the end we are carbon based life forms, to the earth we go and along the way we try to do what we can.

I think every woman on welfare or public assistance should be required to submit to birth control that cannot be in their control. Something injected and if they miss an injection the money stops. It's these welfare babies weighing everything down and giving nothing back to society except joining the ranks of the "supported". Instead it's like every time they pop out another indigent they get a raise. I get nothing for not having kids. People should be paid to NOT have kids. I want on that bandwagon.

It isn't cold, it is reality. It goes against all our instincts to not reproduce but fortunately we are able to recognize when it isn't a good idea.
