Hello,

I have one ootheca of this beautiful pink colour mantis (please see attachment) for sale. The ooth is yellow in colour and it's about 7mm in length. This is a very rare mantis, found in Tapah Hills, Perak, Malaysia. This ooth is from a wild caught female. I have no infor on how to breed this species. If any of you would like to give it a try, welcome to contact me at [email protected] Thank you.

Regards,

Sharon Cheong (Malaysia)

I have a headless dead specimen from Malaysia similar looking to this one. Could be Caliris sp.

Maybe Caliris elegans Giglio-Tos, 1915

 Wow Yen, they do look similar. The one u have has flat edges on top of wings and this one is more rounded, but they sure look alike, down to the markings on all the wings. thanks! Cept of course, one has a head and one don't!

I agree Yen, it could be Caliris elegans. Looks very much like Caliris melli but C. melli doesn't occur in Malaysia I believe.

The flat edge was due to the folded wing Rebecca, when spread out the wings are round too. That mantis was probably too late in cancelling the wedding and lost the head :p but the strange thing was it is a she

Yeah I am not sure Shaik. Based on the Chinese key C. melli can be found in North Western part of Guangdong province. There is a detailed description in chinese for this species.Sorry Sharon don't mean to 'polute' this thread.

Yen,

Could it be a Caliris masoni instead? Many Malaysian species are identified and described by Westwood.

More information on Caliris species... in chinese version

According to this post. there are 4 identified Caliris species as follow.

Caliris elegans Giglio-Tos, 1915

Caliris masoni (Westwood, 1889)

Caliris melli Beier, 1933 - China

Caliris pallens Wang, 1993 - China

Cal means "pretty/more beautiful", Iris means "Rainbow".. Wow..

Yen, your dried specimen is eaten by bug. You have to keep them with naphthalene for preservation purpose..

P/S : You coming back to Malaysia for CNY?

Regards,

Sharon Cheong

I doubt Yen is going back to Malaysia for CNY since he just took a 5 weeks vacation last year . As for me, I haven't celebrate CNY with my family for 8 years myself!!!! Oops... off topic, sorry Rick! BTW, is the ooth still available?

"P/S : You coming back to Malaysia for CNY?"You'll have to hurry, Yen. Doesn't it occur this coming Sunday? :D
Yep is too late! :(

Well Sharon, unfortunately it is work as usual here :( . I know in Malaysia there will be 2 days of public holiday for CNY and also the best time when you can walk across the road in Kuala Lumpur without getting killed!

Westwood also found many mantis species outside of Malaysia. According to the 《Catalog of the Mantids of the World》Caliris elegans are located around Malaysia, Sumatra, and Borneo. While Caliris masoni (Westwood, 1889) are found in India and Vietnam. Whlie the other two species are found exclusively in China only.

You read Chinese right Sharon? following are some info for mantis from this genus if you are interested. (Sorry all it is in Chinese)

No CNY in Malaysia for me :( Unfortunately that is how it looks when I got it from Michael Yeh  I use fumigant for preservation. :)
