I caught a red headed, winged, ant queen, and tossed it into my L4 Creo Picti cage, deciding instead of using it for an ant farm, which is hard to set up, to use her as food. The fast movement of the ant pissed off Eggsecutor (my Creo) to the point where it kept trying to grab it but kept failing. I decided to put them both in the little cup so it'd be easier, but when I checked on them, my creo was running and jumping like a rottweiler was chasing it...except it was the ant, biting it's ! I let the ant go and learned my lesson...

Were there other winged ants where u caught this one? And it wasn't chasing it to eat it. Female alates (queens ) leave the nest in search for a male (also known as alate) to mate with, then make a nest and begin their colony. Queens use/digest the muscle from their wings as food reserves which last them until their workers begin harvesting and bringing back food...as they will never use them again for their new, sub-terranian life...

If you see any more with out their wings or with males still mating and the queens scurring about, let me know ;)

I will. And no, I just happened to see it on the window as I was getting into the car. Yeah I don't think it was trying to kill it, it was trying to scare it. Probably pissed off at being grabbed by the mantis.

Scary for you, though, I'll bet! Sounds like Eggsecutor ended up no worse for wear?

Cool facts about the ant!
