I reveived 3 ghosts today.  They are l3's.  I put each in their own deli cup.  I gave them all water droplets and fruitflies.  1 of them just keeps circling the top and all over in the cup when she does stop, she rocks.  The other 2 are perfectly content hanging around.  These are my 1st mantids (other than a wild caught full adult).  Any thoughts?  Thanks!

She might be scared by something, hence the rocking motion. That’s how they camoflauge, by pretending to be debris swaying in the wind. Or she could be getting ready to molt.

Either way, the best thing to do is to leave her alone for now, and maybe increase humidity.

She may just be stressed or overstimulated from the trip. Put her cup in a quiet place and leave her be for the rest of the day so she can adjust to her new surroundings.

Ghosts like to be communal. I have had better luck with ghosts that are kept together in a large cage than I have with ghosts kept in a cage alone, even for a short period of time. I agree that she could be stressed, but she also might be lonely. Try putting her in with the other ghosts, and see what happens. If you do keep them communally, make sure that they are all about the same size, so none net eaten. Good luck!

I need to keep this in mind when i am going to buy ghosts not let them live alone.

Initially, I did have all 3 together, but they seemed more stressed together than apart.  They would approach each other and swing their arms at each other and run.  I will work on a bigger home for them.  I don't want to keep moving them either!  So many things to worry about as a new mantid mommy!

There is so much conflicting information!  I initially posted that I wanted to keep them together and then someone else suggested not to unless I am willing to lose 1 even if they are well fed.

I keep mine all together. If you keep them together for a while they will get used to each other. The breeder most likely did not keep them communally. As long as you keep the well fed, they will be happy living together. Most people keep them communally so I would not worry about it too much. I hope you figure out what you are going to do!

Actually, they came shipped in the same container.  Also, I had ordered Hydei flies (back in May) but my order has still not even shipped (with my mantids or flies), so I had to run out and get them fruit flies from Petco, they only had the Melanogaster.  They have eaten them...but they seem soooo tiny.  Working on catching house flies outside in the meantime.

Ghosts are fine either being housed separately or communally. However there are some stipulations for housing them together so that they do not become stressed and possibly eat each other....they need to be of similar size, fed well & regularly and have a large enough enclosure for all of them. Because mantises spend the vast majority of their time hanging upside down from the ceiling of their cage, increasing the amount of ceiling space is most important for a communal enclosure. I successfully kept 3 ghosts in a 12"x12"x12" cage from L4 to adult. However, when they become adults any males should be immediately separated out if you don't want babies. If you do plan to breed the males need to be removed to a separate cage after mating so the females can lay her ooths in peace and for the males' protection. Males will keep trying to mate even if a female is no longer receptive and this can become dangerous for him if she gets annoyed by his advances. She may try to eat him.

The person who said you shouldn't house them communally if you are not ok losing even one is correct. While cannibalism is quite rare with ghosts it can still happen, especially if they get stressed for whatever reason. If you are a beginner it might be better to start out with them separate until you have more experience how to care for them properly. Don't worry about them getting lonely if housed alone, they are not communal in the wild, they can just be housed that way in captivity because of the low risk of cannibalism. Ghosts are not aggressive hunters rather they are "sit and wait" predators so they don't generally chase down prey unless really hungry.

Ok. I see your point, @Predatorhousepet. I guess if you are more of a beginner than it makes sense to maybe not house them communally.

@lovemymantisfriends I guess it is up to you to decide how you are going to keep your ghosts! If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to ask!
