My male R. valida is absolutely oblivious to mating. I've tried a couple of times, and he has shown zero interest in my female. I've gone about it every way I can think of short of chopping off his head, which I really don't want to do as he's the sweetest mantis I've ever kept. I've tried putting him behind her while she was eating, putting him on top of her while she's eating, even putting her in front of him, which is hard because he won't stop moving. He tries to grab and climb on EVERYTHING, and treats the female just like another leaf and walks right up her abdomen and over her head. Thank goodness she's not very aggressive.
He's tried to mate with my finger 4 times tonight, I just don't see why he can't be interested in the actual pretty lady mantis!
He molted to adult 8/20, so now he's getting older and I'm getting worried. He's my only male.
Kitty, my female, molted to adult 9/10 and is healthy, and though she does have the stinky brown vomiting problem, she's had it for months and is still otherwise healthy. She eats a good amount every time I feed her. She's my only female.
Do I just keep trying what I've been doing, or is there a better way to get him to notice her? Will I be able to breed them at all? This is my favourite species, and I was really hoping to mate these two and raise the babies.
