Ok I know that mantids grow at different rates but this seems rediculous...

These are both from the same ooth...any ideas about the growth difference?

I would guess the larger of the two is a female, the smaller a male. Females have 8 abdominal segments, males 6.Wayne
Even males and females are not normally that far apart in my experience.

That's good to know. based on adult size differences I just assumed it would be a sex thing :) Also, I think I got my segments backwards, males have 8, females 6.

I knew the thing about the body segments but can i actually sex them before they're adults?

actually most of them have molted twice...(at least i think its twice...they molted once since i've had them and I dont think they were still L1s when i got them)so yeah i think it might just be a timing thing cause Thor (the big one) seems to just be growing faster than the rest...
