small mantis - big prey. good or bad?

hi I have just fed my new L2 or L3 H grandii on a medium sized bluebottle. I thought it would run away but to say it grabbed it with enthusiasm is an understatement, it was a huge battle with the fly pulling the little mantis all over the place, but the little guy hung on and eventually won. It had not been fed since I got it so was probably VERY hungry :lol:

are they known to take on big prey? Next time its getting one of the big bluebottles.

Now it has a really fat and round abdomen, even though it has only eaten about half the fly.

will eating this much harm him? i'm guessing not as they eat big stuff in the wild too. Still, it is an excuse to post some more pics 8)

 
Obviously that mantis doesn't NEED to eat something that large but it won't hurt it. If you feed it somethign that big you don't have to feed it very often so I guess that is a good thing.
