I'm not so sure the nickname doesn't have to do with the "cross" that is sometimes visible in some orbweaver webs:http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm...ross_spider.JPG

Spiders are venomous, not poisonous. The cross spiders are safe to hold...unless you're a fly.

Camel spiders and whip spiders are arachnids, but not spiders.
i dont think thats the same spieces as i photograved  that one is called here a tiger or wasp spider

yeah... i knew some1 who was bitten by a camel spider, very unpleasant to see  ther not venomous but they just rip a piece aut of him

both your spiders looks like the genus argiope, not sure bout that tho.

the spider i photograved is araneus diadematus.

they called cross spider HERE becouse of the white cross like dot on the back

if you google on "kruisspin" you wil see why thwy called like that ;)

ive never seen that X like thing in a web of the cross spider, but ive seen many times in webs from ariope bruennichi.

in the UK theres a spieces called araneus quadratus or the for spotted spider

oh and OGIGA, thats an argiope spieces not a cross spider

There are a LOT of orb spiders in my garden. One of them just ended up in my plants above my pond. A female. I kept on feeding her stuff and she really grew. My first insect pet. After that, she got pregnent and laid about 5 egg sacks. The third generation had another big female. I didn't need to feed her at all. She always managed to stay really, really, really, fat. This was the one that made the spider population explode. She laid about 6-8 egg sacks. I love to watch the little baby spiders come out of the egg sack. Now there are at least 10 genrations of orb spider that grew up over my pond. Now they are all over my garden and in my house too. I had one of those spiders OGIGA photographed. It was in my garden too. Aggressive little feller.
