Street Surprise.

Yesterday, when I was taking out the trash, I found something out on the street...

It was a mantis. A flat, dead mantis. The same species as the one I have. I died a little that day.

My family and I saw that out on Fire Island - the vicitim of a bike tire.

It was being taken away by a bird, so at least it wasn't going to waste.

Does still suck, though.

I have a mantis bookmark! I didn't even need a dead mantis to make it. I used the final molt exoskeleton from one of my Chinese mantids, posed it to my liking in a laminator card, and ran it through the laminating machine. It looks great! I am thinking of making a display of mantid's life cycle for my daughter, using this technique. It is not easy to pose an exoskeleton without breaking it. I put it in a pill bottle with a little mist for a few minutes before posing it, to keep it pliable.
