Take your dog to work day is June 21, 2013.

Since mantids are smaller, won't do business on the carpet, and won't bark (definately) or bite (hopefully ;) ), this may be the perfect option.

  • First, make sure that your employer won't mind and allows animals/pets/insects to be brought into the work area. It wouldn't be good to bring your mantid, only to have coworkers hiding under their desks, deathly afraid of bugs.
  • Inspect your mantid and check it's health. Is it going to molt soon? Lay an ootheca? Will it be okay with the temperature and humidity of the work area? If you are comfortable bringing your mantid, then it's time to...
  • Clean your mantids cage and make sure the walls are shining!
  • Make sure your mantid looks the best it can. Your mantid probably has already done this part for you. ;)
Perhaps prepare a name plate, bio, age, species description, etc. for your mantis. You'll definately have a conversation starter, and can advocate for mantids, insects, and the importance of not using chemcials on lawns, etc.

Have fun! Has anyone taken their mantid to work before?

I like that, although I suppose it really depends on where you work! I used to work at a nursery, and that would have been a lot of fun for him to be out in the greenhouse with me while I cleaned plants for sale! I'd love to take him to classes (my "job" right now) but he might be a little bit distracting (to me)!

They're pretty good at traveling, right?

Pft if I had a desk job a mantis would be coming every day with me regardless. They aren't any more of a bother than having a little plant to liven up the place.

I receive most of my mantids at work to ensure less time in the box as businesses usually get their mail first. Sometimes not though lol. For the most part my co-workers just think iam strange or they are curious but there is always that one jerk that doesn't understand the term captive bred and wants to report you to whomever they can. This jerk is no longer allowed in our office and even my co-workers tell him to stuff it, now so they are being trained well. They also know when a box box comes in and Iam not there to get it, to place it in my file cabinet. I'd say for 99 percent of it, they love my bugs. The tarantula wasn't such a hit though. :)

I also have my Mantids delivered to my work and they get to come out n play right away... they usually just hang out on my bamboo behind my desk. My boss is cool and every time I get any kind of box she's like ooooh what critters did you get today?" Like today... but it was 7500 BB flies so her facial expression kinda changed lol!

My last job was in food service, so not sure that would of worked out well. I really would like to work at the zoo though.
