Billions of Cicadas are about to swarm the United States in their largest numbers since 2004. Will they be arriving in a town near you?

Check out my brand new YouTube video to learn about the impending emergence of Brood X. 🙂

Does anyone understand the timing of these emergences? It seems to me we had an emergence fairly recently. 2021, I think? Apparently two different Brood X species will coincide this summer. But they can't be the same species as we had in 2021, because it's been neither 13 nor 17 years since the last emergence. So what gives?

The periodical cicada broods are numbered, there's a dozen or so different broods which is why we can have multiple broods emerging only a few years after the last. The ones emerging this year will be brood 13 (XIII Northern Illinois Brood) & 19 (XIX Great Southern Brood). There won't be another double brood for 13 years it'll be another 52 years before those two particular broods emerge together.

Here's a good link with info about the broods https://cicadas.uconn.edu/broods/

And another about their emergence this year (Screenshot attached from this website)

Thanks. That explains it. I'm curious what this year's broods will sound like. The 2021 brood sounded like a martian spaceship or something. Not at all like the annual variety.

You'll have to let me know! I went out for the 2021 brood but got there a bit too early to really hear the chaos. Periodical cicadas are only here in the USA. They're really cool bugs! We don't get too many cicadas in Utah so it always makes my day when I hear them screaming to find love. I hope you enjoy them for me!
