Would this be a benefit to mantids or would it be too much of a good thing and have a detrimental effect on them?

I wouldn't do it. You can supplement with things like bee pollen, honey and I've used spirulina as well...but I wouldn't try multivitamins for humans...the ratio of the components will be WAY too off for a mantis, perhaps even to their demise!

not really sure, just don't use viagra and then fall asleep. lol :whistling:

sorry Gio, it just popped in my head and I had to say it. ^_^

They probably wouldn't be able to swallow the granules. BUT, you can give them vitamins, particularly B complex, by adding brewer's yeast. It also makes the medium smell kinda yummy.

Maybe I will test out the vitamins on a select few. If they grow to the size of humans then I definitely wont give them viagra!

I can't see that it could hurt your mantids. Remember it is filtered through the FFs eating it first. It can't build up in the FFs that much, and it can't really gut load them.

That said, I don't suspect it will actually help your mantids all that much.

Else. I think it's funny you posted this. I was at the store today and walked through the vitamin/natural living area and noticed the discount bin. I had a thought of monthly buying whatever is cheap and trying out on the FFs and Houseflies. Probably not worth my time, but tempting.

Please folks, there is enough craziness in the hobby already without tossing stuff into fly larvae food that the maggots don't need. For one thing if you feed them useless stuff, you are detracting from their total nutrition as well as needlessly raising the cost of your fly productin. I am certain that you could add 6ozs of caviar to the mix without harming the larvae (rinse it first, though, to remove some of that salt) but why would you do such a thing. Food is not love!

As you might expect, I based my own formula -- not at all original, I'm glad to say -- on some of the housefly nutritional studies that are easily found by doing a Google search. Someone, Brian, I think, asked why I stopped using flax seed oil. Simple, when I looked the subject up, I found that it is not indicated, any more than the ground carrot and beaten egg that were recommended from the same source. Flies can survive on almost any rotting proteinaceous food, including feces, but the trick is to get the maximum possible yield from a given amount of food and keeping costs down.

Remember, KISS :D

Oh Phil, it's always serious business with you.

Maybe anthropomorphization is the only vitamin we need.

So your basically saying that if I put Omega 3 Fish Oil in the medium that my mantid still wont be able to beat me in chess? Bummer...
