hihi!!! so i have a hierodula membranacea and a few days ago he reached his final moult, he has this weird bit on his eye that wasnt there before, at first i thought it was some sort of eye rub. he is acting completely normal but i just wanted to see if anyone knows what it is :)

okay little update, his eye has got worse and now you cant see his pseudopupil at all, but he is still hunting and running around and acting like normal. someone said that its probably eye damage and i agree, im keeping a close eye on him for any behavioural changes

Yeah it looks like eye damage that possibly happened during the final molt? Honestly there's no way to tell. But as long as he is eating and acting normally then he should be fine. Like you said keep an eye on his behavior and eating.

another update: his eye looks a bit better but the poor fellow cant see shit (yes i know mealworms arent really recommended for mantids, but its the only thing he showed a little bit of interest in, i dont know when he last ate)

My Chinese Mantis (he’s only L4 so a bit younger) has a wonky eye too! What I’ve been doing is catching him a bluebottle fly, then shaking the fly in a separate container until it’s basically unalive. I hand feed my mantis the fly with tweezers and so far this is working great for me. Just a suggestion, I hope your guy feels better soon ❤️‍🩹

update: he died :( he was fine one day, i left a few moths in his enclosure just in case he wanted to eat, checked just now and he had chewed both of his own antennas off, and he was dangling just from his two front legs, his two back legs stiff and curled up :( when i opened the door of his enclosure, he fell to the bottom and didnt move

I am so sorry for your loss. He sounds like he lived a great life despite his eye and was well taken care of by you. You did everything you could, may he rest in peace.
