Thanks for posting this thread. I have wondered this same thing. I posted a thread a while back where i made a fool of myself talking baby talk to my budwing. I had a theory that my mantis could recognize my voice. When it was young it would go crazy on the top of its enclosure when I came into the room talking.

I know they can't hear me when I say "Hey, thats his fly so let go an get your own fly" till I get the stick, then they hear. :lol:

Mine absolutely respond to my voice. They move toward my face which I always though was strange from a survival instinct perspective. I've noticed this will phasmids too although they tend to just calm down.

I believe you. I have noticed the same sorts of reactions when talking sofly, or singing!! LOL (I guess most

things would react to my singing, both living and dead!!!).

And they do move to my face while they study me with their eyes fixed on mine.

It also calms them down if they are suddenly frightened.

They must at least feel the acustic, rhythmic vibrations, harmonic tones, etc.
