when should i try mating?

how long does one generally wait after a male molts to adult to try mating him with a female? :helpsmilie:

on that note: i have my first freshly molted adult male Stagmomantis Limbata. i noticed him this morning, wings all long and beautiful!

2 weeks. But you lose nothing by letting him try every day to see when he's ready. As long as you supervise. My unicorn male started breeding after only 4 days.

Rather than go by set time periods I usually look to see when my mantises are giving me the thumbs up. Female's will start to call with their booty dip come hither poses. Males on the other hand will start to roam their cages like crazy at night when they are ready to romance the ladies.

The male may mate after only a few days, but will the ooth be fertile if he's not sexually mature enough? I always wait longer rather than quickly(2 weeks+ for the male) to be sure the male is potent and ready to get the job done then remove him and re-mate them every 3-4 days, if he is to be eaten I want to make sure the ooths are fertile and he didn't die in vain.

I strongly feel patients is a virtue, as well as another cliché "better safe than sorry". That said 9 out of 10 females I try to breed lay fertile ooths, not bragging just saying.

Usually if they're ready then they're ready. My male P. spurca was still only a week and a bit adult when he mated with the female. She laid an ooth the next day that ended up being fertile. Something similar happened with my T. sigiana. I put both males in with the female, one who was one month old and one that was 5 days old, and the one that was 5 days old mounted the female. She's since laid after just the one mating, so we'll see if it went well.

Well yes of course some are ready before other's are, but I think your missing my point that the older the male is the better the chances of success, it's just my advice to her to go with the higher percentage of fertility is all, but hey do what you feel is right.

i see what you're saying. luckily if he is eaten right away. i have several other males to follow up with. i have alot of these little guys
