I'm a beginner so take this with a grain of salt, but my S. Aurea just completed her final molt and she did not eat for maybe 5 days beforehand. The day after she scarfed down two big crickets and is back to normal now. So it could be a molting thing in my very limited experience :)  

Got 8 new mantid babies today from @MantisGirl13  They arrived happy but hungry and immediately chowed down on fruit flies.

One of the baby shield mantids I got, unfortunately, didn't make it. Wondering if the container I made was the reason it died or if it was just unlucky. Examining it, it looks like the little guys stomach was pretty flat so I think it just failed to hunt the fruit flies I put in there with it...
