    Looking for mantids in California

Yeah I never went looking for a mantid and found them. Always just a happy accident. I found a chinese mantid in my backyard not too long ago, about 2 inches long. Just happened to fall off a branch when I went too close to it. It was weird because he fell with his arms over his head looking...

    My poor mantid got eaten

I would have thought that too, but the lynx is pretty well camo'd in that bush and is an ambush hunter so, well... this round went to the spider. :(

letting my chinese mantis male live in my garden>?

Be carefull, I had the same idea and intent you had. Ok well I raised this little guy from an ooth. Gave many of his brethren to friends after many good times and achieving the last molt I thought it would be nice to let him live out his remaining days in freedom in a bush just outside my...

    Crickets

yeah now I guess I can classify my crickets as pets, lol. Taking care of them just as much as my mantids  I used wet cotton balls in my cricket carrier and they used it to lay eggs. I had all sorts of pin heads. This was good to remember later when I got a curly hair t sling that...

Using a butterfly net house for my mantid

wow those are great little set ups. I think it will be a toss up between them and the cylinder one with the spiral spring. I am probably wrong, but I thought I saw a Chinese mantid in North Carolina while visiting my dad. It was HUGE, about 6 inches. Here is a pic. Any help on the id would...

New to the forum and saying hi

My "yard" Millipedes Polydesmid Oxidus gracilis. I find these all the time out here. Found about 10 of them under a rock in the yard. Grabbed some dirt to put in their cage and ended up with a little stow away that you can see in the right side. Not sure what type of milli it is...

figured since this is the intro thread I might as well introduce some of my critters too. My Mantids. Bought one at the LA Bug Expo for my son (3 yrs old). He loves it. Found a second one in my backyard 2 weeks afterwards. Same species (generic chinese mantid sold at garden stores) and...

Using a butterfly net house for my mantid

yeah I can see that being a problem, espcially if you keep a lot of mantids. Me, I only have 2 and I don't mind taking a little time hand feeing them or catching a single fly or moth from the backyard for them to eat. Even with the extra room, catching a flying insect doesn't (so far) prove to...

Using a butterfly net house for my mantid

it is only about a foot tall from bottom ring to top ring, then about another 8 inches to where it ties off. I am use to the Chinese mantids so it doesn't seem so big to me, maybe 2 of them can live nicely (barring canibalism which most likely will happen  ). Many little guys would fit...

yeah kids are like bugs, they are "cute" and fun to watch when they are small. And I assume that if your mantids and other bugs got as big as a teenager and had an attitude to match, they would lose their appeal :P

Using a butterfly net house for my mantid

ok just got through adding the peat moss and decoration moss on top (don't know the right name for it). Looks much nicer. The pic I took at night shows the inside better. focus zooms in on the netting. sorry, but I think you can get a good idea of what it looks like While I was doing...

Using a butterfly net house for my mantid

yeah I missed the Introduction section  I will make that my next post. Thanks for the sp name. I figured it would be 1 of those 2. I know the chinese mantid can get almost 6 inches in length right? How big do the Carolina mantids get? Like I said, I am a total novice at this, but...

Using a butterfly net house for my mantid

I have seen those cylinder net cages for raising butterflies and thought it would be nice to house my mantid. It is the generic ones you get from the garden store (carolina mantis??). They only get about 3-4 inches long. I am sorry I am pretty novice at this and don't really know proper names...
