Whoops! Just didn't wait long enough. She did need to pump them up...I should have known, just panicked. She is fine & dandy now.

I had one of my mantises out to "play." Less than 2 hours later, she molted to adulthood, but her wings are severely deformed. Is it possible that moving around so close to her final moult messed with her wing development? Otherwise, she seems fine.

I never find them in the wild when I am looking for them...only by accident!

I had one last year that lost a leg. It didn't grow back, but it didn't slow him down either. He lived to adulthood, normal lifespan, no problems catching food. It made him stand out from the rest, too! Miss that little guy!

Thanks for the input, everyone. It's a common thread in my life that I tend to make things more difficult (and more expensive) than they need to be! I'll give some of your ideas a shot!

I've put Cricket Quencher (the jell-o-like stuff) in with my mantises for a water source. They use it & so do the fruit flies. My local pet shop, though, has quit carrying the plain kind, and only has the calcium enriched (which I assume is more for the benefit of reptiles that usually eat...

Are there any good mantis books out there? Seems like all of them are written at kid level - which can still have good information, but I'd like something written at a higher level. Another thread mentioned The Praying Mantids By Frederick R. Prete, Lawrence E. Hurd, but it is quite expensive...

That is one expensive book! Those that have it or have read it - worth the $? While I'm no entomologist, I do have a scientific-type interest.
